7 weeks of playoffs. begins january 1 with a week off prior to the ncg. wraps up on the last weekend in february. there will be a few teams who don’t get the nod (always some malcontents) but most years they wouldn’t have a legit chance at the title anyway.

For real though, if you stipulate that there are something like 70-80 FBS programs that are relevant on some level at least equivalent to the bottom 5 franchises in each of the NFL/NBA/NHL/MLB, then a 24 team playoff with 8 byes makes a lot of sense. Pro sports all include almost half the league in their playoffs. Seems fair to have the top 25-33% make it, and to have the top 10% get byes and the next 15-20% have to win a play in to get to the main bracket. So it preserves rewards/advantages for the very best teams, and admits enough teams that the first teams cut will be mediocre 3+ loss teams that didn’t beat anyone good.

How about this:

The whole season is a playoff. If you lose, you are disqualified from national championship contention. If, after conference championship games, there is zero, one, or three or more undefeated teams, then thr two best teams as judged by an agreed upon mathemagical algorithm play eachother for the championship.

This brings the excitement of playoffs to every team, and extends it throughout the entire season, magnifying the importance of not only every game but every snap. This would make college football uniquely exciting and dare i say compelling.
