childish bullshit aside, what's really going on? how do they "rip us off" and what are we looking to get out of this? are we trying to subjugate them or something? they're right next door and have a ton of resources, seems dumb to upset them unless we're so big they just have to deal with it, in which case we might as well take it over. is that the plan, destroy their economy until they vote for annexation?

Two things do stand out.

Canada has long had stiff tariffs on US dairy to protect their own dairy industry. We've always just looked the other way.

More problematic is China routing cheap imports through Canada so it ends up having a "made in Canada" stamp when it's really made of components imported from China. This is much more serious, geopolitically, and part of China's strategy to overwhelm the world with cheap exports and trade imbalances.

My sources tell me that the US and Canada were in good places in the talks and inching towards a deal when Canada unexpectedly walked away and had these aggressive tamper tantrums. It may be part of their diplomatic strategy, it may be Carney betting on distorting the US elections in November to his advantage (Maine and Michigan have pivotal elections for the GOP), assuming a weakened Trump and minority parties in congress will allow Canada to dominate the trade talks.

Trump was right on Canada taking advantage of the US. What he doesn't grasp is that we're so big and so rich that it's really not a big deal for us to be gently taken advantage of by a smaller and less affluent neighbor. The China problem is a much more recent one and and genuinely a thorn in a way the long dairy tariffs weren't. And Trump has made himself look like the aggressor with his language about the 51st state and his antics badly hurt the Canadian's own conservative party, who'd have been much more likely to work with Trump and align over the cheap Chinese import issue. Trump is the sole reason Carney is PM instead of the Canadian conservatives, who were widely predicted to win the last election. Till Trump came along and shot himself in the foot in the classic Trump style of making people enemies when they didn't need to be enemies, leading to a big swing to the Liberals at the last minute (all polling surveys backs this up).

But this could easily backfire on Carney if the trade talks fail completely. Their economy is much more dependent on the US than vice versa.

The "Transshipment" Crackdown: The White House released a major trade report titled "The Great Transshipment Scam," which explicitly targets how Chinese manufacturers route goods (such as steel, aluminum, and manufactured parts) through third-party countries—including Canada—to mask their true origin and dodge heavy U.S. tariffs.

Stricter Border Demands: During the recent trade negotiations, Washington pressed Ottawa to adopt aggressive measures against foreign steel and aluminum imports and coordinate external trade policies. The U.S. wanted strict assurances that Canada would align its tariffs with the U.S. to prevent North America from becoming a back-door entry point for cheap Chinese goods.

Friction Over Canada-China Openings: Tensions spiked significantly following independent diplomatic moves between Ottawa and Beijing regarding electric vehicles and agricultural sectors. U.S. officials made it clear they view any relaxation of Canadian import barriers toward China as a direct threat to North American industrial security.
