The Host used Controller One. This was usually the original first party controller, the one with responsive buttons and a stick that had not yet begun drifting toward death. The Host knew its tolerances. He knew how hard to press, which shoulder button stuck, how far the analog gate had worn down. Home field advantage began before the game loaded.

The second best controller went to the highest status guest.

This was often a Prep, a Jock. Nobody announced the ranking. The Host simply reached into the pile and handed him the good gray controller without making eye contact. Children understood Allocation long before they understood politics.

The Clique mapping was immediate.

Preps asked, “Does this one work?” and were usually given another controller.

Jocks claimed controller failure only after losing.

Nerds tested every button on the menu screen and adjusted their strategy accordingly.

Losers accepted the bad controller because they wanted to be invited back.

Scumbags unplugged someone else’s controller and insisted the game had frozen.

Exactly.

Mad Catz. Performance. InterAct. Translucent plastic in colors not found in nature. Turbo switches nobody requested. Handles designed by an adult who had apparently never seen a human hand.

These were Caste Assignments.

In UMC households, extra controllers were always official. There were even extra ones just accumulating in Bonus Rooms from System Link parties.
