In 1952, Turing's homosexual relationship with another man led to his arrest and conviction for gross indecency. He was given a choice: prison or a year of hormonal treatment, which was essentially chemical castration to suppress his libido. Turing chose the hormone therapy, which involved injections of estrogen. The treatment caused impotence and gynecomastia (breast development).
