its graphics and game mechanics (including the ability to view your shots through different 'camera' angles) were a huge hit when it was released in june of 1992, and it was considered one of the most 'photorealistic' games to date:

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/jWiylF6tvaA/maxresdefault.jpg

it sold over half a million copies by the mid-90's, it was allegedly one of the motivating factors behind the decision to make 'myst' look 'real' rather than cartoonish, and it was computer gaming world's game of the year. it also led to an eventual buyout from microsoft.

it was probably close to the importance of doom in terms of getting people to upgrade their PCs to standards like the 486, though more tilted toward the 'working adult' market than the bored teen demographic.

look at those graphics. imagine being an early-90's office worker who only played solitaire and minesweeper on the computer and then THIS thing shows up.

they aren't much better than a lot of SNES golf games and a handful of the SNES games even had a chase cam that followed right behind your shot. Just having it render a single static frame each time you move to a new location is pretty shitty.

Under a Killing Moon was way more advanced and looked a lot better. Fully 3d, photorealistic. That was the tech sensation of the 90s pc gaming.

basically this was an upscale version of Scorched Earth. instead of picking your ammo you pick a club. but it's just choose angle, choose speed of shot, see where it goes
