a max lift has a lot more to do with your mastery of the form of that lift than the number of reps you can do with say, 80% of your max. i'd agree with that. i don't see how you figure 20% of law school dudes can do 225 once. i'd say your average law school dude could put up around 160 for 1 rep if that.

Dead lift is about 1000x more credited than bench press. However, being short and stubby is no less mechanically advantageous for the DL than it is for the BP.

This is true, but having short legs helps. I guess to the extent a person is proportionately stubby, there is actually an advantage on the BP over the DL. I stand corrected.

it seems like the additional weight reaches a point of very sharply diminishing returns.

eg, the all-time record at any weight is mendelson's 715lbs. truly remarkable. but as you note, he was 350 when he did that.

now if we cut that weight almost in half - down to 181 - the bench record for that weight level is NOT cut in half. in fact, it's hanging out at 556lbs.

When looking at the entire world population, the percentage of humans who can bench press 225 lbs (102.1 kg) at any given moment is exceptionally small—estimated to be well under 0.5%, and likely closer to 0.05% to 0.1%.

While hitting a "two-plate" bench press is a common milestone in fitness circles, expanding the data pool to include every human on Earth completely shifts the statistics.

When we narrow the lens down to 18–35-year-old males globally, we are looking at humanity’s absolute peak demographic for physical strength. Because of this, the number does jump noticeably compared to the general population, but it remains surprisingly low.

Globally, it is estimated that only 1% to 2% of males aged 18–35 can bench press 225 lbs.
