A repeat sex offender named Abdimahat Mohamed has been charged with kidnapping and third-degree criminal sexual conduct. Mohamed, 28, is currently in custody at the Hennepin County Jail.
According to the charges, a female victim told police that a man she met on Snapchat came and picked her up from her Mankato house for what was supposed to just be a meal and a trip back home. However, the victim said the man kept driving, told her “You’re not going home,” and brought her to a hotel close to the Mall of America.
The man reportedly took the victim’s phone, told her she was not permitted to leave the hotel, and slapped her across the face when she attempted to leave. The victim reported that she was forced to have sex against her will and was sexually assaulted multiple times.
She later told authorities that she was able to escape when she was in the man’s vehicle, opened the door, and jumped out. The victim reportedly sought the help of a bystander at which time the perpetrator drove off.
A sexual assault exam was performed at a hospital and DNA profiling was conducted. The DNA was run through the Minnesota Convicted Offender DNA Database and matched with Mohamed’s DNA. Mohamed was subsequently arrested by police.
Mohamed convicted in two sexual assault cases in 2024
Last year, Mohamed pleaded guilty in two sexual assault cases. One of the cases stemmed from a 2024 offense, the other related to an offense that occurred in 2017.
Charges from the 2017 offense say a 15-year-old female victim reported that she asked a man she knew from Snapchat to drive her to a location in Minneapolis. Court documents say the man picked her up but did not take her to that location.
Instead, the criminal complaint says the man drove to a separate location, two other men entered the car, and the victim was threatened with a gun and told to perform a sex act. The charges say the victim was raped and then let out of the car.
The 15-year-old victim reported the crime to police and DNA evidence was collected. Mohamed would not be charged for this crime until 2024 when he provided a DNA sample for a separate 2024 sexual assault.
Charges from the 2024 case say police were called to a Minneapolis apartment where they found Mohamed and an adult female in Mohamed’s apartment. The adult female reported that she had been raped.
Mohamed was eventually taken for a suspect sexual assault exam. However, he reportedly became aggressive, spit on hospital staff, and repeatedly spit at law enforcement.
The victim reported that Mohamed had threatened to shoot her or her sister if she did not have sex with him. Mohamed was reportedly “a Snapchat acquaintance” of the victim.
In the 2024 case, Mohamed was charged with two counts of first-degree criminal sexual assault, two counts of third-degree criminal sexual assault, and two counts of fourth-degree assault. Before the case was fully adjudicated, charges were filed in the 2017 case.
For the 2017 case, Mohamed was charged with two counts of first-degree criminal sexual assault, two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct, and felony kidnapping.
Ultimately, Mohamed pleaded guilty to third-degree criminal sexual assault for the 2017 case and fifth-degree criminal sexual assault for the 2024 case. All other counts were dismissed.
Mohamed was sentenced to three years in prison, but that sentence was stayed. Mohamed was ordered to register as a sex offender and complete 10 years of probation. He did not serve any time in prison. Mohamed’s sentencing orders were signed by Judge Juan Hoyos.
