I was totally enthralled by the self driving feature. I LOL'd constantly while tooling around in it. Every year I do a 4500 mile round trip drive with a bunch of stuff, and it gets really tiresome. The Tesla self driving feature is 180. I drove the demonstrator first for about 40 miles in the daytime, then 75 miles in all kinds of heavy highway and city traffic at night without ever touching the brakes, steering wheel, or accelerator. It's also a very nice driving vehicle when you hand drive it. The electric part is more of a bug than a feature, but there isn't any other vehicle that comes close to this thing. The entire tech package is really well done. Wife loves it and enthusiastically endorsed it. I totally LOL'd at the fact that it has grok built in and you can talk about stuff as you boogie down the road. Plus, libs hate Musk, so that's another plus. An anecdote: on the way back to the dealership there was a dead cat in the road. The truck very competently moved into the other lane to miss it. I was hoping to see what it did with deer, but they stayed off the road. There were some alongside the road, and I could see that the camera and computer identified them as objects of interest.

How do you do a Long Trip in an electric truck? Every stop takes how many hours?

According to the Tesla trip planner, my normal 2135 mile drive will require 17 stops and 5.5 hours of charging; however, some charging stops can be overnight at motels with destination chargers. We generally do it in 5 days in order to visit along the way, so 1.1 hours/day on average. Combining charging with lunch/bathroom breaks will increase efficiency, but I'm not in a big hurry any more. It's an adventure. Other than long trips, charging at home is the plan. No idea whether charging will be an irritant. I will find out.

How does liability work, though? What happens if it can't stop in time for a kid chasing after a ball from behind a parked car into the middle of the road?

Is there an assumption/software TOS that the individual in the driver's seat of a self-driving car is hyper-aware every second of the drive, so any software mistakes come back to the car's owner?

It’s 100% his “fault” if the computer screws up period. Are you a lawyer? Only way he would be able to shift the blame to the OEM is if he convincingly claimed that the steering wheel fought against his input or something.

Tesla advertises its system as "supervised" full self driving. I don't go to sleep when using it. I pay attention and stay prepared to intervene, as I have no interest in crashing. It's like having a very good first officer, but I am still pilot in command. No doubt some ace lawyers will be trying to shift liability to Tesla, as its pockets are deep.

Not sure. Initially I don't think so, but I might change my mind. I hear Captain America looks good. I am surprised my normally conservative and attention shy wife likes the thing so much. Will she go for a wild wrap? Will I press the limits of good taste? Stay tuned!

You got me there. My current truck is 7 years old, but in great shape. I didn't need a new truck, but advancing age and arthritic knees and spine might driver assitance features attractive. I cross shopped Ford/GM/RAM trucks. RAM was the only viable alternative. Ford has screwed up access by raising the step in height 5 inches and the GM trucks just generally did not drive well and seemed stuck in the past. Bottom line I'll never spend all the money I have anyway, so why the fuck not? I give away more than one Cybertruck equivalent every year, so why not boom a little?

My old man is booming. He's got a RAM and an Acadia even though my parents decidedly do not need two vehicles. He's talking about selling the family cabin and getting a trailer.

How is the size of the interior and rear seat? I've never been in one but I heard they had a fair amount of room so was thinking about getting one to replace a compact SUV as a family car that could also be able to haul a sheet of plywood

It's roomy, but a bit smaller inside than my F-150 crew cab, but much larger than most cars. Definitely bigger than my Q7. The bed is a bit over 6 feet long and according to the specs is slightly roomier than a Ram short bed with Ramboxes. It feels smaller when driving it. The rear wheel steering gives it a tight turning radius. The less than 1 turn lock to lock variable ratio speed sensitive steering is 180. It feels, dare I say it, sporty. Go to the Tesla dealer and drive one. They are absolutely zero pressure. Best sales experience I've ever had.
