As of December 18, 2025, the United States maintains travel restrictions under a presidential proclamation signed on December 16, 2025, expanding earlier restrictions from June 2025. This policy imposes full or partial entry suspensions on nationals from certain countries due to vetting deficiencies, high visa overstay rates, or failure to cooperate on repatriation.
Countries with Full Restrictions (suspension of entry as immigrants and most nonimmigrants):
Afghanistan
Burma (Myanmar)
Chad
Republic of the Congo
Equatorial Guinea
Eritrea
Haiti
Iran
Libya
Somalia
Sudan
Yemen
Newly added/upgraded: Burkina Faso, Laos, Mali, Niger, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Syria
Additionally, full restrictions apply to individuals holding Palestinian Authority-issued travel documents.
Countries with Partial Restrictions (limited visa categories, often immigrant visas and select nonimmigrant like tourist/student):
Burundi
Cuba
Togo
Venezuela
Newly added: Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Dominica, Gabon, The Gambia, Malawi, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Tonga, Zambia, Zimbabwe

In fiscal year 2024 (October 2023–September 2024), 11,274 Syrian refugees were admitted.
BTW: 1 is too many.

This is stream of consciousness, so take with a grain of salt. But almost all criticism of Trump is short sighted in my view. People complain about tariffs and foreign policy and so on. "He's not going to bring manufacturing back, the next administration will get rid of tariffs. It makes no sense." All of this is either short sighted or assumes that gigantic change is possible in a very short timeframe.
I believe that Trump is basically serving to restructure the world economy to be better aligned with underlying realities (energy, finance, etc.) He is using the tools at his disposal to do so. But more broadly, he is basically giving permission to people to leave the prior economic order behind.
People will argue that we can't make things here, but the truth is that the hyper-financialized global model of production and consumption reached its peak (probably around 2020) and is unworkable going forward. Some of this legitimately comes down to the fact that the availability of oil used to make diesel fuel and jet fuel basically peaked from a per capita standpoint. There's just not enough growth in the fuel we need to move goods cheaply around the world.
Now to be clear, I'd much prefer we just let the asset bubble deflate and then restructure the economy in a healthier way. But it seems like the powers that be will never allow that. Instead, it seems that there is an effort at a controlled demolition of the old way and a move into a new system. Trump is the enabler of this.
Obviously feel free to call my a lunatic.
