He's the best we've got. I'm listening to his podcast where he interviews contemporary thinkers and he's operating at a very high level. He dominates many of his guests by dropping hints that he's at least as well read as they are about certain topics. Like he knows the limits of their knowledge and he pushes them there and keeps them there throughout the whole show. He is also a big classicist and has done his homework on ancient history. He seems pretty based tbh.

c'mon, man, stop the flame. Nobody thinks someone named Seán Ó Cearbhaill is some kind of physics master

Not saying he is. Like Carl Sagan he's a science communicator first and foremost. The people who are the best at the science side of things are weird shut-ins who no one would ever put on TV. SC comes across as more of a polymath than a specialist in any one field.

tbh I'm just listening to his old quantum lectures right now, but I still like his "natural philosophy" concept and being both a popularizer and a serious representative of the field. but he's always been an annoying NPR lib in many ways.

He's very bitter about getting denied tenure at University of Chicago. He did a podcast episode about it and I thought it was a one-off, but I've since heard him mention it multiple times. When I first noticed him he was a CalTech, and it wasn't until much later that I realized it was only a contract gig

Wikipedia now calls him a "theoretical physicist," but I've heard him insist loudly that he's a COSMOLOGIST, not a physicist. He claimed this was another reason he never got tenure. He said physicists only dabble in cosmology and don't take it seriously
