3 hour onsite. Most likely 4 or 5 rounds of 30-45 min interviews with interviewers I’ll be interacting with cross functionally. This is for a B2C company. One of them will be an engineer for sure. How about the other 3? How should I prep for the final round? Be bold or play it safe?

Are you a Product Manager? I’m finding that PM interviews are all different based off the type of company and flavor of PM. I’m finding it hard to script an interview - they are hard to prep for and duplicate. There’s no track for PMs per se.

How do you script for PM interviews?

Do you tailor your personal story for every job to adequately demonstrate passion for a particular industry/company? Your background seems pretty standard, so possible that's where the problem lies. What do you say when someone asks why (insert specific tech niche)? Employers give jobs to the most passionate applicants and you're coming off as having no particular interests besides needing a job in product management.

Agree with other posts itt that a job at a startup might be a good move if nothing else to moreso narrow/target your resume.

This is a good point. I do come across as non-compelling. I don't resonate with my interviewers.

Fix for this is to do background research extensively? What should I be doing?

What else?

I don't think the fix is background research. I think it's finding a way to have more of a humanist touch. Tell stories about growing up where you first got interested in the specific niche. Convince the interviewer that pm role xyz was specifically made for you because of your past experiences. The story needs to fit besides electrical engineering --> top 5 MBA.

Also find a way to connect with the interviewer on a 1-to-1 level. If you're more reserved, ask questions about their background. It's just like a date where you're trying to get the girl to go home with you. PM roles are about managing people and you need to show you can create the necessary connections to get people to do what you want them to do

If you can lay the groundwork with a good first 10 minutes that demonstrates passion and develops quick rapport, you're much more likely to get a pass on corporate case questions that arise in the back half of each session with interviewers. Perfect your tell me about yourself, and why this industry/why this company answers for every interview. Find a way to work this in naturally even if you aren't explicitly asked. For example, there might be some specific question about your background to start. I usually just barrel through that with prepped material explaining whole background story + basis for passion. Obviously address the question at some point, but make sure you're giving your pitch when you get the opportunity. Or the interview moves forward and you've left no impression, and the interviewer has all the control to run you over in the following 20 minutes.

Hey man,

You’ve been giving me some solid advice. Any tips to practice/ make a connection with interviewers. I used to be good at connecting during engineering interviews but fail at business interviews. I can connect with people in a non interview setting in a casual setting. I also fail at connecting with women and apparently I make bad first impressions when there’s something at stake. Should I be more deprecating, etc? I think I’m charming but fail at people management - how do you give off the impression that you are a business people manager?

Thanks.

In terms of the interview, speaking with confidence really goes a long way in building a connection. Try to read the situation. If they're giving you more opportunity to control the conversation, start asking questions and if they start to open up, get more personal with your questions. Maybe go from questions about the position to their background. Try to inject humor, deprecation is always good if you can pull it off. Hide nerves as best as possible, you want to seem like you're in a pleasant mood/at ease with the situation.

In a more general sense, it really takes a lot of practice to figure this all out if you're not a natural. You really need to make social success your number one focus in life in order to make significant progress. Push yourself outside of your comfort zone. Analyze every interaction, what you did well and how it made the other person feel and vice versa. Rinse and repeat, find out what works. Also find a good psych doctor and experiment with using different med combinations in different situations

Are most of your interviews behavioral based? If so, they usually have some standard questions. Tell us about a time you had an issue with an employee, how did you resolve the conflict? Have you ever worked with someone with a diverse background? Etc. I have a list of stories memorized, some not even remotely true, that I spew out that have creative solutions. You have to practice your stories and be able to deliver them flawlessly (without sounding rehearsed).

Ok, tomorrow I have another final round with 6 interviewers (2 of which I've already chatted with). Each interview will be 30 mins each. Seems like this will be mostly a fit interview. Any advice guys?

Pick a different career track that doesn't stink of AIDs.

You've got an EE degree so you could be doing all sorts of more interesting technical jobs.

Most epic product failure:

I had to come up with an answer on the fly... so not sure if I fcuked this up. Talked about how we created the program for month and predicted revenue but it wasn't effective because there were a lot of cancellations. The story is not exactly coherent because extending the time frame is not that much of a challenge. On the issue of how to overcome this, chatted about how to look at the problem from all angles and sometimes not take the customers wants as bible and needed to sometimes challenge the customer... and how in the future i would float customer ideas across the entire team.. blah blah .. weak answer...

How would you work with a UX (Designer):

Rambled a bit and talked about user stories, user journer and how I did wireframes. Also mentioned that I sometimes work with the designer (because he's a contractor) - rambled here also on how I don't always involve him because of resource constraints, and involve him on major decisions... Weakest answer was the above...

1) you need to be specific for PM answers. you didnt really answer the question based on your answer above. your answer was bland and generic. did you atleast ask him what the data shows as drivers for cancellations? then you could build an answer from that based on your domain/product knowledge (which you should have if you are applying to that company)

the questions you ask in the interview are as important as your answers

2) UX is driven product's roadmap and strategy. the product is your baby. you are going to work collaboratively but UX must fit into the whole ecosystem of how product is going to be positioned in the market and you are going to drive the UX to achieve the goals of the product. Give some specific examples (make up shit that is BELIEVABLE if you have to)

For 1) I was the one who was asked about my most epic failure. I would have the data for cancellations. It's just random cancellations from the scheduling queue.

For 2) yeah I made up shit. I don't think my response was very confident/ believable.

For Why Y company?

I am interested in Y because:

1) I have the passion for the role as when I was younger, I did xyz which I hated and Y eliminates. It's something I connect to. Also I love tech and see that Y is at the forefront of z so it's exciting to be a part of a company that's forward thinking.

2) Impact: Y has 100k customers and solves the problem of A which is sometimes the critical factor of keeping SMB alive and the lifeblood of the economy. The ability to have impact on so many customers and the ability to have an impact on a critical factor of their business is powerful. Furthermore, I have PM experience in space B so I can add value. Also, I looked at some of your D features and have some ideas on making it better for the customer.

3) Growth: I want to be a part of a company/ industry that's growing. You guys are in space B which has a lot of inefficiencies and has a lot of opportunities for growth. Also, you're just covering only 1% of businesses which means we are still in the early stages of growth. When there's growth in industry/ company it means growth for me professionally and that's good for me.

Thoughts?

It’s a shitty role and if you are technical you can do better. When your project goes in a ditch your leadership will work a side deal with development (who actually have all the levers beside the checkbook) and cut you out. Then you’ll be blamed. Go work on the technical side.

I once wrote out a whole interview for aspie guide. You are failing final round I interviews, which means you are failing on fit. To get to final round, you have already shown that you know the right stuff. Now you need to show that you are a nice, amicable and easy to get along with guy. Yes, you are aspie and yes, you can do this

1. Always be pleasant, polite and considerate to everyone. This includes the secretary, hr, anyone you interact with. Be considerate, positive and polite about everyone you talk about, people you worked and went to school with. This does not mean lie. This means place emphasis on the real positives of other people and your relationships. If there is one negative stand out and it makes you look good or helps bond with who you are talking to, you can mention ONE negative thing that should stand out from all your positives. Uou only get one.

2. Be an active listener and let the other person lead the conversation. This includes how you talk about your work experience. If they want substantive career details, they will ask. If they want to chit chat, follow their lead. Be I terested in THEM and ask questions about what they tell you. Not random, canned questions but questions that are specifically tailored to that person. And then listen to what they say and pay attention. Do NOT try to steer the conversation back to your work experience and how awesome you are unless they ask. Forget the business bs, you have that down. If you want a book, get one on active listening.

Again, the most improtant thing is listening and following the interviewers lead but you can aspie your way through it based on hints. Are they all work work work? If so spend more time talking about work but still listen to what they want to hear. Which part of your experience are they most interested in? What do THEY need help with in their job? It's not just about your resume, its about the other person and what they need.

If they talk more about personal stuff, kids, weather, commute and where you live, you follow THAT lead. Turn it back on them, ask for their advice on whatever they are talking about.

Be nice to everyone, LISTEN, and care about the person you are talking to and what they want from you. You will be fine even if aspie.

You should probably just Stop after a certain point imo. Don't bother trying again until you can convincingly aggrandise your resume or improve your phenotype somehow.

Sure you might succeed after 48 months and 11 interviews but it will be a Pyyrhic victory at that point. You might even succeed this week, but your reward will be being a fucking "product manager" which is NOT what you really want IRL.

Also by the time he gets an offer he won't even think to negotite his salary or anything, he'll throw himself into the (pointless) job in an effort to Prove himself and probably just make a bunch of enemies while he's at it. Before long he'll be the typical poaster getting "the fear" on sundays and wanting to killself. He'll be forever fearful of being RIF'd or otherwise Ruined.

A well paying job is a pretty good reward. He should not negotiate salary given how hard of a time he had getting a job. Salary negotiation is for people who genuinely have options and even then it is frowned upon. You are better off getting the right experience and skill set and moving on to a better job down the road.

I skimmed the thread so may have missed, but do you have a compelling story for why you want to do PM? (Other than failing OCI; perhaps a spin on failing OCI.)

For your (relatively senior) role, they're looking for someone who can lead and manage others, so that's what you need to convey, ideally through anecdotes of how you've successfully managed others in the past, maybe business school projects or previous professional or personal pursuits. If they ask questions about what you've enjoyed the most in your past jobs and what your biggest challenges were, tie your answers to leadership and organization.

Unlike entry-level jobs, which just look for someone eager and personable (i.e., connection), this is a leadership position that requires leadership skills and traits. You're applying to be the boss of other people, so act like it.

I applied for PM roles during OCI but failed with the OCI companies - graduated last year. Now doing PM for a shit company. So formally not a lot of experience. Should I still act like a boss or should I act personable and "eager"/ show passion?

I've been wondering about the above for a while now, and would appreciate your help in that.

It's not either or. You need both. You need to be personable enough to be likable -- this is a threshold; once you're likable enough it doesn't matter. AND you need to be confident. Acting like a boss doesn't mean acting like an asshole. It means knowing what you're doing, not requiring handholding from your superiors, and being able to manage other people.

I agree. I tried really hard to control the narrative, but as Clinton mentioned above you have to go with the flow of the interview as well... I am out of sync and don't control.. it's a fine balance that I'm failing... I probably sound like junior varsity as well and not polished/ corporate/ weak leadership..

At this point I'm thinking there are multiple failure points. I would be happy to do live mock interviews with anyone who's willing to... robert.whitestown@gmail.com
