I’m sure it will crack dark matter, quantum gravity, and the origin of life, too, but the moment it explains what consciousness it, how it works, how to recreate it in a lab, how to test for it, etc, it’s going to a have a profound effect on society and many religiousmos will have mental breakdowns

You’ll still have some holdouts just like you still have flat earthmos and evolution deniers, but once the evidence becomes too convincing for most people to deny, we’ll see lots of cons jumping out of windows and throwing themselves into traffic

i don't think "consciousness" is all that important. i used to think it was, but after getting smarter and more knowledgeable i don't think that anymore. in my experience other smart and knowledgeable people don't either

we still find it interesting because we're curious and because it's natural to want to know exactly what one is, but i don't think that understanding the full mechanics of consciousness will be a consequential development for humans. nothing will change after we figure it out. understanding its mechanics won't help us make artificial intelligence any more capable, either

Agreed imo. This is just a fixation that some philosophers had. Doesn’t actually make it important. Also we elevate consciousness to a level where it has significance but imo animals have the Same Thing as people do just with no internal dialogue and almost no emotion in conparison. And they have it bc of natural selection probably.

How could AI solve anything that we ourselves don't know? We were Made to be self-deceiving organisms and anything we do is downstream from that primal Truth. Nothing we create or "discover" has any epistemological merit beyond the shallow scope of this framework.

It’s already done this in chess. It discovered moves and strategies that were previously unknown to humans. The reason its able to do this is because we’re not programming it. Rather, we’re feeding it data and instructing it to learn, and there are all kinds of structures in the data, both implicit and explicit, that we’re not aware of.

Some of it is understandable and some is not. You might be able to learn roughly what the network would suggest for an optimal move in different situations, but distilling it into a human understandable intuition is likely impossible in certain situations. The policy network might be looking 40+ moves ahead, and compressing that search tree into something interpretable is challenging. A simple example is endgame table bases - some of the solutions look retarded to humans even after close study. The situation is exponentially worse starting from move 1.

"recreating consciousness" would not just be a big thing AI does in our lifetime, it would be a universe-altering, biggest achievement of mankind type of thing

some chips and wires that are conscious? youve birthed a soul that is not human, with your own labor. bigger, daresay, than aliens landing. certainly bigger than propelling humans onto the moon or some other planet. That's just extrapolating walking across town.

creating someone conscious (I dont think you can write 'something' anymore) that is not through the sexual reproduction of humans is completely outside the parameters of the game and breaks every philosophy, every religion, every politics, everything

The existence of libs/azns/women just shows that “consciousness” isn’t real and that a lot of people lack it anyway. It’s just an evolved way of organizing one’s thoughts. If some dumbfuck animal had evolved the ability to talk and had a retarded internal dialogue, we’d think they had consciousness.

Well I strongly disagree. the existence of supposedly crazy or insane people is virtually proof that consciousness does indeed exist as a very distinct property of the human mind, or at least an amplified and intensely experientially noticeable one compared to other organisms. consciousness doesn't mean "something that agrees with my worldview" afaik.

seems deliberately obtuse

not only by definition, but self-evidently, as long as man has existed he has remarked upon his own consciousness as some kind of "animation" or "ensoulment" or "psyche". There is hardly a human culture, and certainly no civilized culture, which fails to note and even sanctify the uniqueness of this human characteristic.

Whatever you want "god" or "godliness" or "divinity" to mean, humans have always understood their consciousness / soul to be a shared spark of something otherworldy, something divine.

The reason materialist atheism fails so spectacularly is it has absolutely no satisfying way to account either for this concept, or for this cultural phenomenon. Materialists must only say, "yeah every other age of man, and all the geniuses therein, were just magical-thinking tards, haha. The men who composed the epics, who built the cathedrals, who wrote the symphonies, et al, were really fucking dumb, but Im here to tell them we are all meat."

Same materialists now argue "when alexa fetches a celeb's DOB for me, she's kinda conscious if you actually consider it"

i don't think consciousness being explained away is what will depress religiousmos. a mechanistic understanding of the brain that shows the self is an illusion (along with related ideas of having agency/free will) is what will really do a lot of people in. reducing human existence to unconscious synaptic processing with a thin conscious representation (likely because something like attention schema theory is true).

I don’t understand you Sam Harrismos who say (1) the self is an illusion, and (2) consciousness is the only thing we can be sure of. These seem completely contradictory. What are you really trying to say?

i'm not a Sam Harrismo but I don't see the contradiction there. there's a feeling that we identify as consciousness. we don't understand its nature but it's obviously present. people start with the premise that consciousness has to be experienced by a "self" because that's their intuition for their own experience, but there's no reason to believe that. it's just layers of neural representations reporting on other neural representations, with no unified center.

why is a center versus layers a meaningful distinction if you agree that consciousness is present

There's no contradiction here. Consciousness and the self are completely separate. It's only a contradiction if you start with the assumption that a self has to experience consciousness.

we already have this understanding and it makes no difference and never will.

https://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262633086/being-no-one/

even if you could dilute the concept down to something that idiots could understand they would just be like "ok guess i'm a gene-copying biorobot, you best believe I'm going to live up to it champ. the survival of our species is of paramount importance for some reason."

even now we have people decrying nihilism while advocating nihilistic worldviews - "life has the meaning you give to it". people don't even realize that they are nihilists and will attack you for being one haha. it's a total disaster.

Don’t think this is right, it just makes the mystery of consciousness one step more abstract or removed. If even that. We already know that animals have something like consciousness. It’s no more mysterious if a machine has it.

I’m not talking about machines having consciousness
