Lowest common denominator in that it has much lower barriers to entry and can often rely on image much more than any actual talent as a vocalist, musician or writer. It was so easy to scale it globally because anyone could easily generate a beat if they had a turntable (or later a computer) and every culture could appreciate the obviously appeal of metered, rhyming couplets. Of course there are awesome hip hop artists/songs/albums that came out of this massive cultural shift, but there’s a ton of forgettable garbage, just as their was with rock music, but it’s orders of magnitude more shit music with hip hop. Go to any hip hop open mic night at any college in America and you’ll spend 2+ hours listening to a bunch of people who suck and who likely would never have even tried to pretend they have creative ambitions if it wasn’t simple to declare oneself a hip hop artist.
