Load up on armor - send 12 horse carriage tanks full speed barreling into Lee's rebel breastworks / trenches / fortifications at Petersburg or Spotsylvania , send them shooting into the rebel rear causing havoc and confusion at the bloody angle in the spotsylvania wilderness...

But the first assault of the tank carriages would be filled with pure explosives to cause pre-havoc before the havoc causing. 2nd round of assault they'd think "oh shit more explosives", then the bloody angle would collapse and the rebel breastworks would be nullified, and Grant would no longer be thought of as a butcher for repeated assaults on those breastwork / rebel fortifications...

Colonel Jeremiah Butler of the 18th Tennessee regiment had drawn up elaborate plans for an armored vehicle as early as 1863, and even had a prototype under construction at a Confederate camp near Richmond. It included a rotating turret and would have been manned by a crew of three.

"This great device shall mean victory for our Confederacy, ensuring that this struggle shall not have been in vain," he wrote in his diary. "Imagine Grant's surprise when he faces not only soldiers, but also our mighty iron wagons," he added.

General Robert E. Lee dismissed Butler's proposal for an armored force and ordered that all construction cease immediately. Butler was killed in battle at Peakesville in 1865.

There wasn't a need for tanks in the Civil War since there weren't any machine guns, other than a few gattlings. Tanks were developed as a counter to machine guns.

Not true - tanks were developed as a counter to fortified defensive lines , i.e. trench warfare and the elaborate, miles long in depth systems that developed in the great war.

This kind of warfare already began to take hold in Petersburg, spotsylvania wilderness (the bloody angle), cold harbor etc, where Grant was labeled a butcher for repeatedly ordering attacks against Confederate breastworks , trenches, and defensive lines. The lack of ability (or willingness to accept the cost of) to attack these Confederate lines head on was a major problem, and what tied Grant down in the summer of '64 where he nearly ruined the army of the potomac which had become a revolving door for newly arrived immigrants to the u.s. to join and die in his army.

Sherman took a bunch of midwestern bros, farmers who liked camping out and such, to take atlanta / fight Johnston in huge flanking maneuvers , while grant was tied up with that mess.

One advantage the confederates had was in war aims - if they could just defend their lines they'd win.

It wasn't the engines that were a problem, it was the engineering of the drivetrain/tracks.

The first tanks would literally run off of their tracks if they approached jogging speed.

It would be possible, perhaps with only frontal armor and only against rifle shot, but one of these with some plate on the front could have been the first “tank”.
