In the biggest upset for the United States at the Tokyo Games, Simone Biles withdrew from the gymnastics team competition after it had started on Tuesday, handing Russia’s squad a path to the gold medal and ending American domination of the event for more than a decade.

Biles, Team U.S.A.’s star, said she pulled out of the event because she wasn’t in the right place mentally to perform the difficult and often dangerous skills she is known for, after feeling so much pressure to be successful. She had been struggling with the stress of being the greatest gymnast in history, she said, and outside expectations were just too hard to combat.

Before the event on Tuesday, she said she began “fighting all of those demons,” and couldn’t hold them back.

“At the end of the day, I have to do what was right for me,” she said, adding, “It just sucks that it happened at the Olympic Games.”

She said she was not certain whether she would compete again at the Tokyo Games, starting with the all-around final on Thursday, an individual competition.

Simone Biles wore her GOAT leotards to ‘hit back at the haters’

Simone Biles meant to ruffle some feathers with her bedazzled leotards.

Last month, the 24-year-old gymnast scored her seventh women’s all-around title at the US Gymnastics Championships, the most all-around titles for an American woman ever.

Plus, she did it wearing a series of self-referential leotards from GK Elite, each one embellished with a sparkling goat.

The new unofficial mascot, which fans have dubbed “Goldie,” was meant to represent Biles’ status as the Greatest of All Time (GOAT) — and send barbs to her detractors.

“The idea was to hit back at the haters,” she told Marie Claire.

“[The haters] were joking like, ‘I swear, if she put a goat on her leo, blah, blah, blah.’ That would make them so angry. And then I was like, ‘Oh, that’s actually a good idea. Let’s make the haters hate it, and the fans love it.’ And so that’s exactly what we did and why we did it.”

During the competition, the four-time Olympic champion became became the first woman to land a Yurchenko double pike vault in competition. She’s now gearing up for the 2021 Tokyo Olympic trials, which were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

So as usual, libs and the media and their forcememeing did more harm than good. She could have been like any other gymnast, had her moment and then faded back into obscurity to live a normal life. But they had to obsess over her for years and declare her the GOAT.
