They pop up like weeds in a mathematical garden, seemingly randomly, but in reality there is an elusive pattern. The enigmatic nature of prime numbers makes them irresistible to autists.
Also, they are the building blocks of all integers (fundamental theorem of arithmetic) and the foundation of number theory.
