2000: Half Life, Quake III, Tribes 2 (technically 1998, 1999, and 2001).

2020: Call Of Duty XYZ, Doom Eternal, Half Life Alyx

The jump from 1980 to 2000 is a quantum leap. 2000 to 2020 is incremental. If you did 2004 (Half Life 2, Battlefield) to 2020, then the improvement is barely noticeable. Ok so textured and shadows have gotten better. Gameplay is no more large scale or large number (look at Tribes 2).

And some new games are obviously WORSE than their predecessors. Look at the new Halo game, etc. It reminds me of how in the Roman Empire they eventually forgot how to do free standing sculptures and has to just make reliefs.

It's only recently that computing power itself has started to stagnate.

At the same time, there's stuff like the water in Half-Life 2 in 2004, like shouldn't it be easier to do something like that now than it was then? But you encounter tons of high-end games with shitty looking water. And then there's gameplay/game design. I pick games up now and I'm like "wow this sucks," or those they just feel like they haven't thought of anything new since the PS1 era.

Dreamcast made N64 look like shit basically, but I think most people didn't know what to make of Shenmue or Seaman or whatever. They had forged their brand loyalties with Nintendo or Sony, and the latter had full saturation of the airwaves. And then Fight Club and later its vaunted DVD came out, guaranteeing a win in the console war for Sony.
