Before the war: 9% interest rate and about 70 per dollar Now: 20% interest rate and about 80 per dollar.
The interest rate and exchange rate are inversely related. Russia decided to save the currency at the expense of having a fucking 20% interest rate. So while the ruble is fairly flat, everyone in Russia can enjoy interest rates of 25%-35% for anything. That of course is going to cause extra economic pain. Poeple here are worrying if the Fed raises to 3% from 0% too quickly that will cause a recession. Russia did a 11% hike overnight. |

Think of the late 70s, early 80s recession but instead of a fundamentally strong economy that can bounce back from the supply and interest rate shocks, virtually every major company in the country has severe supply chain issues and struggles to source inputs. |

Why would anyone expect the army that stalled out almost immediately to have some great KD ratio? It's not like they Barbarossa'd their way across half of the country encircling armies. They tendriled their way in largely unopposed and then stalled out while getting randomly ambushed when they reached the edge of their supply lines.
It is very Winter War esque in the sense that their logistical struggles make them very vulnerable to ambushes and modern portable anti-tank weapons mean you can randomly explode at pretty much any point. The Ukrainians also just seem more competent on average, with the median soldier having combat experience from 8 years of war in the Donbas. And then factor in the fact that they almost certainly have better eyes on the situation because NATO is feeding them the location of every Russian asset.
That said, i'm sure if you include civilians it's heavily skewed against Ukraine. |

IMO the Russians are going for the land bridge to Crimea and I would not be surprised if they made a strong push to connect their territory with Transdnystria. of course this would come at a very high price, but domestically Russia seems to be getting into the old mode of “we don’t care how many of us die” which is a powerful force |

Russia wanted to decapitate Kiev, depose the Zelensky government, install a puppet, and annex (at least) all of Crimea and the Donbas. And likely set up a future annexation of all of the Ukraine.
