Some of the evidence supporting the involvement of the phonological loop in sentence comprehension has emerged from reading comprehension and short-term memory studies involving concurrent task paradigms (e.g. Baddeley, 1981 ; Baddeley et al., 1975 ; Besner and Davelaar, 1982 ; Coltheart, 1993 ). For example, Baddeley (1981) asked subjects to detect word order errors in visually-presented sentences while performing one of two tasks concurrently. In one condition, subjects performed the error detection task during concurrent continual articulation of the word “the.” By engaging the phonological loop in the rehearsal of “the”, Baddeley hypothesized that the loop’s contribution to reading would be suppressed, and thus the extent of its involvement in reading could be determined. In the other concurrent task condition, subjects tapped one of their fingers, paced by a metronome. Performance in the word error detection task was significantly worse during concurrent articulation than during concurrent tapping, suggesting that the phonological loop contributes to reading processes.

you can't teach it to high schoolers unless you have them listen to it and recite it. reading it is pointless for 95% of high school kids.
in the UK, they listen and recite it.

if this is a "world literature" course, then one shakespeare should suffice
I remember being decidedly unimpressed; meanwhile, I read and enjoyed longer novels like Grapes of Wrath

Yeah. You can start even younger with some of the plays. The key is to go all in on teaching it. Simply assigning sections to read overnight and having bland discussions about themes or imagery won't cut it. You need to spend lots of time on individual scenes; do close readings of passages; really get the kids engaged in the story.
With a good teacher you can have 10 year olds into Shakespeare.

The whole focus on literature should be scrapped. Should focus on functional reading and writing like news articles, studies, memos, reports, research papers, briefs, correspondence etc. HS students are terrible at writing even letters or emails. Need to teach how to be concise and clear first. Then focus on functional topics like logical fallacies, canons of interpretation etc. rather than motifs, foreshadowing, realism, metaphors, irony.

Shakespeare is the greatest English writer and one of five greatest writers ever.
Yeah I think if you speak English and go to HS you should be taught Shakespeare before you are 18, lol
Your REAL problem is that many HS kids today should not be in HS but rather vocational

1) middle english (chaucer's english) is another language from either old english or any phase of modern language; just try reading it without a HEAVY (old/middle) german background
2) no one can agree on the dividing lines of where early modern english begins, when it spreads and becomes either spoken or literary, or when it transitions into modern english (read e.g. hobbes' leviathan and his translation of thucydides, seems like he's writing in separate phases that were developing or emerging proximate to his lifetime)
3) modern does not mean contemporary, the latter being what we speak; hence it's only on places like xo that you find people actually competently mimicking modern english for high-style, e.g. for threads about poasters engaging in 100% str8 man-on-man ass fucking
the finn is right on this very specific point, even if no where else in the thread

i doubt it. i studied his plays in high school (albeit in prince george's county, md) and got nothing out of it.
i am now a huge shakespeare fan and have seen a shit ton of his plays performed as well as read most of them. that is not attributable at all to my having read (and not understood) him in hs.
