Pretty sure it flopped. They filmed alot of it here at our local harbor. You'd see the massive WW set being towed out off the coast all the time. Costner and the crew would be out partying at the local watering holes. Island was all a buzz about it. Then the tabloids blew up that he was enjoying nights with a hot local hula dancer... Probably ended hid marriage.

with GoT theres also the element that so many of the fans were girl power retards who thought daenerys was the hero the whole time. so on top of the show getting kinda lame in the later seasons they were straight up pissed and want to pretend the whole thing never happened because theyre idiots

The last season being Short screwed it up. HBO was cheap and the creators had hubris and wanted to do “Star Wars” or something. Danny Burning Them All wasn’t a bad move necessarily, there was just lots of gay shit around it

it really did suck considering they took almost twice as long to make those 6 episodes as they did 10 for earlier seasons. still it had like 40% more viewers at the end than the middle seasons yet it just disappeared.

of course that was the right move but somehow it wasnt obvious to people that dragon girl was a villain all along. seemed obvious at least since she turned on her brother in the first season

I think most of the resistance to her turn was how abrupt it was. She was always an entitled cunt who got bitchy when things didn’t go her way, but the burn kings landing thing wasn’t plausible. They should have made the season longer to make her descent into madness look reasonable.

The little finger death was the low point of the entire series. The Sansa Arya thing made no sense and was rushed. Little finger was set up over the seasons to be the most strategic character, plotting years in advance.

The death of the eunuch though was even more rushed.

A few thoughts on this:

(i) Even though the show is about the journey, if the ending is bad people feel the need not to pick it up. Lost is a apt comparison. How many people will pick up watching either show if they know the end is bad?

(ii) The show is over and it was already so popular at its peak, there isn't really room for it to pick up new viewers. Contrast taht with Suits, which is a much worse show, but it was popular during the pandemic because everyoe is like "Well - i guess i've never seen thsi show before".

(iii) People talk about pop culture much less in general. Politics and the culture war dominate the conversation.

The endings of Lost and GoT aren’t really comparable. Game of thrones was still enjoyable even with the bad ending. It didn’t cause me to look back at the earlier seasons and conclude it was all garbage. Lost’s ending was basically artistic fraud that revealed everything before was a bunch of random mysterious bullshit. It doesn’t work without a payoff tying it together. I would still recommend GoT to someone.
