will become as rare as 8-Track machines and reel-to-reel tape players.

some specialists will need them for transfers, but who the fuck would seek them out otherwise. there is not a boutique for VCRs the way there is for 'vinyl' record players and 'film' and other anachronistic tech. they suck.

The VCR blueprints are still there and so are the factories, they're just dormant. Probably every decade or so, we'll just manufacture 500,000 more VCR's to meet demand.

You really do need to be digitizing anything important sooner rather than later

Working VCRs are becoming increasingly rare. They all have belts that dry rot. This can be fixed but it's a chore. And it's not a permanent solution either, something electronic will eventually fail (likely the capacitors) and then it's basically game over.

You can find working ones for far less than the $300 NSAM was claiming above, but they're not practically free like they used to be.

A while ago I started to go down the rabbit hole of digitizing my own stuff but got stymied by a VCR that was suddenly broken.

Honestly it's probably easiest to just find a service to do it for you

Yeah, I think so. We have a million books that say "read those old Roman and Greek authors." The only other name you would see added to the list might be Marx, but do we want that preserved? No one today is doing better than Plato, so why not just keep reading Plato for the next thousand years?

Yeah, sure, in the sense that we don't have some "Hello world" text document some guy made in the 1970's. We have nearly everything preserved that was designed to be preserved. Look at how much was lost from, e.g., the 1973 National Archives Fire. That can't happen now and any military record digitized at the time we still have. You'll find shit like this constantly; "write it down bro" is what invites disaster.

Yes because people could read them and copy them. What could archaeologists do with a SCSI hard drive from the 1990s? Even right now it would be a pain in the ass to mount one.

How much of today's information is actually worth preserving that isn't etched into stone or made into some kind of plaque or statue? No one really NEEDS to learn about everything that was happening in 2024. There are like two dozen books that will get you 99% of what you need to function.

This seems to be a facetious comment given your "trade school" comment above.

I don't know what to tell you, I am a pretty techy guy and I might throw in the towel on it. And there are services in every town that do this work.

If you do get a working setup you may as well roll it into a side gig. Advertise on Craigslist, collect $15 a tape for easy work
