this has kind of always been true though. there were playpens in the 80s and kids birthday parties. It was a big deal to go there.
the idea that McDs is for seedy GED-havers reeking of cigarettes to eat on a daily basis is actually the innovation

This is less about class and more about divorce/feminism/dual income households, ie there has been a massive trend for decades where food prepared outside of the home has become the majority category consumed, and food prepared at home has steadily and massively declined since 1960.
https://www.foodindustry.com/articles/food-at-home-vs-food-away-from-home-market-share/
At the point where over half of the meals Americans eat are outside the home, and you’re selling a lower price point, lesser materials product, your goal is to attract the highest volume consumers (and keep costs down as much as possible). This was also why the fast food companies started talking about their customers like they are addicts they want to keep hooked ie “heavy users” and 20% of fast foot customers started to account for 60+% of their total transactions.
In the 80s, back when their analytics were also super primitive, McDonald's still thought they were trying to get young families on a weekend night or a soccer team celebrating after the soccer game (see eg 80s McDonald commercials). By the 90s they realized that divorced/single/depressed losers were really their cash cows (pun intended).

McDonalds traditionally is a treat for poor people and a staple of the working and MC diet.
It's now to a point that to take a family a 4 there, you are spending like $70, which doesn't really make a lot of sense. It's almost to the point where it's something only truly wealthy people would do ironically as novelty activity to mock.
