they were working similar territory, affable lanky Boomer beefcake, but Harmon was an actual elite college athlete and better looking. he just didn't suck as much cock, so they 86'ed him from movies.

Young KC seemed to have a better big-screen presence. That said, MH aged better. He was probably better suited for TV, and NCIS was a mega-hit.

Harmon probably has earned more this century than Costner has.

i think 90% of it is down to whether an actor finds a movie role early in his career that plays to his strengths, that establishes his movie persona.

KC has been in some dud movies, where his charisma was totally neutralized. but he got the chance to shine in multiple movies early in his career that really showcased his persona and solidified his 'star persona,' so he gets by.

or take William Hurt. the guy is almost autistic in his woodenness on screen, but they somehow found a few *perfect* roles that played to this anti-personality, which made a virtue of his limitations (The Accidental Tourist, Body Heat, etc).

Mark Harmon basically starred in 3 movies, they did mediocre business, and then he was relegated to TV. if he had had a director who really was invested in finding a movie to match his persona, he could have been a big star. they just squandered him.

Good analysis. I'm not so sure that every competent actor has a potential niche where they can shine like a superstar, but I guess I can't rule it out for MH.

Kevin Costner is an elite actor for hsi ability to convey emotionless emotion. There aren't many people who can seem like a real man but also be plausible in dramas.

Mark Harmon is a good looking cool guy who has some charisma. But he can't really act with any subtlety.

Difference between the 2 is really the difference between a movie star and a tv star...
