When did tech optimism fully pivot to tech dystopianism?

Strong arguments can be made that mechanized trench warfare, then the atom bomb, were points of no return.
But I think it was within the lifespan of AutoAdmit, really, that we passed a pivot point.
Probably introduction of the iPhone.
Its impossible to be optimistic about tech now. It will disfigure humanity in a way that can be called "death". Humans will continue on, but not in any recognizable form. We are alive at the historical moment.

As soon as normies started using the internet and Ruined it
The Internet and Technology was Good and Positively Received by the upper 20% of society. Up until The Normies gained access to the internet via Smartphones
It then became Ruined, and is now a Dystopian Fixture that is despised by both normie and human alike, because it has been warped into The Normie's Image, and is therefore Fallen

*Reflects on this thread and the proven (gorgeously) insightful OP of Narnian sheepdog descent*
*Reflects on the parallels with The Abolition of Man*
*Feels the overwhelming urge to type “FTGE” on a computer, preferably an internet-connected one*

there was an inflection point somewhat early in the 10's when online search results started getting crappier. more censored, more restricted to a smaller circle of 'approved' sites, fewer surprising or 'accidental' results (like research papers that universities/institutes forgot to paywall or password-protect), etc.
prior to that point, 'tech' was something which felt in actual practice like a tool that you could pick up and use. after that, it became clear that it was more like a service which could be throttled, degraded, or denied to you.

In modern terms, swipe apps. Tinder certainly did not cause the downfall of Western society but it was the final nail in the coffin. The whole society has been completely degenerate ever since.
If you're interested in a more historical but still modern perspective, Blueprint for Armageddon is Dan Carlin's best work and he talks a lot about how WWI was the first time entire societies went to war and were able to withstand the kind of punishment and horror that was exponential compared to what the world had never seen before.

i think of tinder and swipe apps as streamlined facebook, or even myspace.
the idea behind ms/fb is that your avatar, your online profile, is YOU in a real way. Your existence pixilized, for consumption by strangers.
Swipe apps just streamlined the strangers' ability to instantly judge you WOULD/WOULD NOT.
So now, not only have you reduced your entire life to a profile, it is further reduced to a binary decision: LIVE, BREED, BE WELCOMED, BE HOT, BE LOVED vs. DIE LOSER PIECE OF SHIT
About one second is spent on the decision, and it is made by thousands and thousands of strangers.

if you tried to say this in VC circles you will get labeled a "doomer regulationist" or something along those lines. e.g. stuff like this:

where someone cherry picks a singular statistic that doesn't look *as bad* (and it's still been trending up the past decade!) as the other countless "wtf happene in 2012!" charts and mocks any attempt at arguing the free market does not always guide society to an optimal outcome.

what a fucking faggot. the cherry picking shows he knows *exactly* what he's doing too.

people 15-19 don't realize how fucked the sceenification of the world is. when you're going to in-person school to socialize and hanging with your friends gaming or whatever at night it doesn't seem so bad. probably similar to how most of us grew up. it's not until after college and most people aren't being compelled to socialize irl that it becomes clear how demonic it is.
gee, i wonder why he didn't include 15-24 or 25-44 in his analysis?!

i agree. especially considering the disconnect between the ALMIGHTY NUMBERS not aligning with the real economy.
it's funny that at the beginning of biden's campaign the message was "the economy is better than ever goy, what are you talking about?" of course that message didn't resonate well with zoomers and millenials that are struggling and so depressed because they see little hope in things changing that they're killing themselves at unprecedented rates. but the best i've seen them come up with is "uh, well, sure there's still a lot of work to do... but we're gonna do it!"
it's anyone's guess how long the "we're walking on it" messaging will work when there is no gameplan, let alone significant steps taken. i suppose that's why they're doubling down on orange man bad since they have no accomplishments to tout. and hey, it might work for some time, they've been going with the "don't worry goy, hollowing out american industry and QOL is a good thing" for decades now and it seems like most people are only *starting* to wake up.

im old enough to remember the 80s, when "computers" and space shuttles and such still made the future seem amazing. I remember going to FutureWorld at the Magic Kingdom and looking at the rockety architecture and thinking "when Im an adult I will live in a place like that". I remember the character Mallorie on "Family Ties" dancing around celebrating "Its 1984!". I remember the see-through Swatch watches and everyone felt they were so futuristic and cool. Clear watches!
Maybe it was the mist of childhood, but there still really was tech utopianism.
I dont remember that from the 90s, although coming online in the late 90s was titillating and we all searched for boobs.
But generally the 90s didnt feel very future-focused and the vibe was kind of post apocalyptic at Lollapalooza etc. People dressed tribal and aborigene, not futurist. Tattoos and combat boots
