Trust me that I'd know this better than you: the people at the bottom 25% of Boalt get offers at firms that I would personally never want to work at, but they will get paid the same as you. |

But how can anyone realistically weigh GPA? For example, in my engineering class, there were five (5) people. Everyone was weeded out after an incredibly difficult math courses, and the only five left were pretty damn smart. Even THEY found the curriculum almost intolerable. Every B+ was a fucking victory; every A- was cause for total celebration. Not even sure if anyone even got As. In one of my classes, the prof simply gave everyone Ds.
Now compare this to my English classes, in which you could B.S. a paper together in a few hours and carry away at least an A-...
I don't like the LSAT either, but at least it's something related to law school and equalizes the playing field. |

From what I understand, the LSAT is one of the best standardized tests (in terms of correlation with 1L performance). I guess I'm just not a huge believer in standardized tests in general.

these are likely people lacking "soft factors" not just in law school admissions, but in life (e.g. charm, ability to attract the opposite sex) -- a shortcoming that they've always thought they could make up for by their academic achievements. your admission to a top law school with a relatively modest lsat score basically tells them that the only thing they're good at in the world doesn't fucking mean shit. it's easy to see why that's upsetting -- they know that this just foreshadows their future failures in the profession, when their intellectual achievements will be overshadowed by their utterly "TTT" social skills.

True, but its made based on certain factors which are well known to everyone. This is what makes the admissions process somewhat fair. It is also true that the LSAT, which is taken by everyone who applies and is curved against other test takers is weighted more heavily than GPA, because GPA cannot account for numerous things such as toughness of major, luck with professors, etc. Thus, I had semesters where I had tons of hard sciences and got a 2.7, but other semesters where I took cake classes and got a 4.0 with less effort.

Which is exactly why they're TTT. Now, hey, if she were cool and was like "crap, how lucky was I?" I'd say cool, congrats. Instead, she acts like she had this coming for her great performance, which is simply not true.

I seem to remember that we had a short debate a while ago about over Boalt and LSAT scores, needless to say I have made a 180 turn after learning that one of my friends (who is VERY intelligent and articulate) took a ten point hit in his LSATs. So this made to make me rethink my opinion on Berkeley adcom, especially since I'm very sure that he could litigate circles around me, LSAT notwithstanding.

i'm pretty familiar with the way admissions work at boalt. it's not propaganda when i say that they do care very much about soft factors. like any other school, a certain number of people get in on sheer magnitude of lsat/gpa -- but at boalt, this is a pretty small number, and anyone who's not an auto-admit has his/her file looked at by a faculty member and at least one student adcomm member. the people on the adcomm debate over each and every candidate -- everyone who gets in off committee has been carefully vetted. of course, every once in awhile a "low" lsat person will get in and upset the people on this board. :) |

I've read lots of interest on most of the top schools, but very little about Boalt (other than mindless bashing). I know that all of the top schools are good, and provide excellent oppurtunities, but it's the personal views that I value for learning about quality of life and general attitudes on the campus. |

I think that most people who get into Boalt with sub 160 LSAT's, including myself, know that they got extremely lucky. However, knowing you got lucky and feeling deserving of an admission are not mutually exclusive.
Yes, I will admit, I got lucky. Many people with my numbers were turned away. Do I think I deserve it? Well, the ad com seemed to think so, and that, to me is the opinion that matters.
You're right, law school admissions do not exist in a vacuum, but I think that we can all agree that each law school has a bit of a different environment (social, academic, etc.) and each school looks for certain qualities in an applicant that it feels will fit their mold. Why do people with low LSAT's get admitted to Berkeley when they are not admitted at any of the other T14's? I think it's because Berkeley is willing to make a numbers sacrifice to get those subjective qualities they deem important.

But its not all equivalent. Someone with a 3.9/179 who gets into Boalt doesn't really need to display the same sort of humility. Anyone in their position can expect admissions to most T14s. Someone with a 3.9/~160 cannot. Those are generally #21-50 numbers.

But to hear any kind of split (high GPA / low LSAT or the converse) actively boast as if one factor doesn't matter is fairly unsettling. I have just the opposite problem (99.9% LSAT / B+ GPA) but I would never boast about getting into any of the T14, because I *know* that my GPA is sub-par and that my application is thus flawed in a major way. I certainly don't say that GPA is a useless metric, and this is what the poster seems to be implying about the LSAT. |

Before you read about it in the press, I wanted to share some news with you. The annual US News rankings are being released today, and show Boalt dropping from 10th to 13th overall. I could regale you with tales of the invalidity of the rankings, indeed the deans of all but two American law schools have signed on to a letter protesting them, but the fact is that the press loves them. Thirteenth overall is just not an accurate reflection of who we are.
I remain quite optimistic. Our IP program retained its first place ranking among specialty programs. In the two categories that are generally considered the most important: reputation in the profession and reputation among academics, we remain solidly in the top five. And, the data that goes into this survey is as much as a year old. What really hurt us this year are some of the categories based on resources. We have made enormous progress these last twelve months.
The best part is that Chris Edley, the dean-designate, is already at work with the Central Campus to increase our resources. He has ambitious plans in place to improve almost every aspect of the school, including those areas that are most prominently featured in the US News report. I am confident that next year's rankings will show a marked improvement, and Chris will not be satisfied until we are at the top. Of course, he will need to rely on your support now more than ever to be successful. Then we can still berate the rankings, but with a smile on our face.

okay, seriously, i'm not an asshole and i feel kind of bad for riding on you for your poor semester. what i do think is ridiculous, though, is when xoxo posters get all bent out of shape over the admissions of a school that clearly has chosen to pursue an aggregate applicant profile a little different from its peer schools.
boalt gets enough apps to easily fill its seats with more or less the same moderately high lsat/low gpa people as other non-HYS schools, but it is a public school and its administration has decided that it wants to produce a bunch of "community" lawyers to serve the state of california. in spite of the vitriol on this board, it can probably get away with this and still remain a top school because it still produces a ton of the typical corporate lawyers that will go on and review documents competently. so my question is -- why do you guys care so fucking much about it? |

The adcomm has professors spanning the ideological spectrum, but yeah, it's random who looks at your app. They're not supposed to base their decisions on political orientation, obviously. And once you're in committee multiple people look at your app so as to minimize any one person's influence -- they all have to agree to admit or ding you. The adcomm is not a bunch of hippies that only let in other hippies; if you check out the composition of any one class you'd find a lot of conservatives and a bunch of IP/techie people.

I love Boalt and I agree completely with what they're trying to accomplish with the way they do admissions, both in terms of building a seriously kickass student community and making positive contributions to the public interest in California and beyond.
I just wish Boalt could practice AA, because the way it stands now, there are SOME pretty dim non-URMs that get admitted under the present regime.
I don't mean to suggest that everyone who got a modest LSAT is dumb -- I've met some really amazing people who have done very well academically in law school in spite of choking on LSAT day (and a bunch of 170s people at the bottom of the class) -- but I also know some total dumbasses who are both politically and mentally abhorrent.
I don't really like that those particular white and Asian people are at Boalt, because they tend to forget that it's a privilege to be at a top law school and that they were fortunate to have gotten in, and act like total assholes and look down on the URMs here.
Basically, I know that every law school is going to have a bunch of asshole-ish white and Asian students ... I just don't have any sympathy for people like that so it makes it worse for me that low-LSAT-scoring versions of those people sometimes manage to sneak in under Boalt's admissions system. If we're going to have pricks in law school, at least let them be intelligent, right? Collateral damage, I guess. |

I think that our school definitely has a greater range than any place at which I have previously studied. It's a welcome change. But, like you said, some people are not as open about their viewpoints. Although I am a die-hard liberal, I often feel bad for the more conservative students I know, who often feel to intimidated or frustrated to contribute their views to the discourse at hand.
Yeah, our class is pretty good. A few bad apples here and there, but overall a good bunch. I love the people in my mod. At the BLF auction, we were singled out as the coolest, most close-knit mod. I keep hearing about intra-mod drama and conflict and am really glad I don't have to deal with that. My closest family member lives in Arizona, so much of the time, my mod is my upport system and my family. |

the only point i have PERIOD is that boalts 25/75 numbers are thus: 3.65-3.9 160-168 an admit with a 160/3.87 doesn't seem so crazy...her numbers are RIGHT IN THERE, and eveyone always says if your numbers are in there for a school it is a target.
do not try to force what i am saying into a racial argument, lil_token. that is hitting way below the belt. |
