On a related note, however, Shaq O'Neal's trainer says that Shaq is able to routinely (key word: routinely) bench 1000 pounds.
Lord have mercy. No wonder he used to dunk and pull down the backboards !

yeah, and by someone who dedicated their entire life to it (it was kennely, right?) and used a bench shirt among several other things that NO ONE could do while also meeting the rigors of an NBA season...not even remotely close.
The "raw" bench press record is still below 800 i think.

The average adult male Gorilla can bench press about 4000 pounds. This "fact" comes from a book called "Uncle John's Slightly Irregular Bathroom Reader".
Trained, maybe 5000?

An average, shlubby American guy of around average age *might* be able to bench 80. Maybe.

I could see Ben Wallace doing 500 pounds once, dude's a beast. I don't think Shaq throws up that much weight.
Larry Allen doing 700 is believable...
Any adult male should be able to bench his own weight at least once, so I guess that is 165 or so for the average male. My current bench goal is to bench 225 10 times (right now I bent 225 like 6 times) by the end of May.

"dude, I've worked out for 16 years and have lifted in some of the most hardcore gyms in NYC. I have never, ever seen anyone curl 225 pounds. The most I've ever seen was maybe 205 and these guys were absolute beasts."
I'm with you. I saw someone curling 275 once, but that was jay cutler and he was *swinging* it. The guy was 340lbs or so of mostly muscle (fat by competition standards but still a very low bodyfat...10-12% maybe). I saw a non-pro in person curling 205, and he was easily 6', 275 and I know for a fact he was on a virtual cocktail of juice.
200 pound curls are perhaps somewhat common on cable curls, but I've seen more people benching in the high 400's and low 500's in person then I've seen curling 225-plus. I have weak arms, so I'm somewhat skewed, but at a 365 bench, I was happy to rep out with 155 on curls, and that was considered impressive in a pretty hardcore gym. Hell, anytime anyone's curling the olympic bar with 45's on each side, I'm considering that an impressive lift if it's not being swung up out of control.
The only place i can feasibly imagine it as common is an NFL training camp or something, and even that, not terribly so....i couldn't envision a college on the planet that had all kinds of guys hitting that weight.

I'm sorry to bump this thread, but I read it and couldn't stop laughing. I looked this up on google and found something about Shaq being able to 1RM 1000 on the leg press machine. Anyone who lifts knows that the leg press doesn't measure anything. The best part is about ICE being able to curl 225 8x. Vernon Davis, Maryland's Tight End who was considered the biggest physical freak to enter the NFL draft in years can't even do anything close to this. To make sure, I called my buddy who played 4 yrs of college ball with him to confirm. HTH
